TV Colour Schemes - In the Night Garden

25 February 2010 21:43

Having an 18 month old boy opens up a whole new world of TV, books and music. I watch In The Night Garden nearly everyday (it's a 2010 version of The Teletubbies). What's amazing to see is how it grabs my boy's attention more than any other programme. It dawned on me one day that all the noises in the show, all the colours used, will all have been thought out by some background team. Why not use their hard work in a future webpage?! Picking colours out of screen-grabs shows some quite interesting colour schemes - colour schemes that could be used on any webpage for any audience. Search YouTube to see any of the characters below - you'll either find it strangely watchable, or a bit weird.

The Haa Hoos

The Haa Hoos bounce around the forest doing not much. They either can't talk, or can't be bothered.

Iggle Piggle

Clearly high on life, Iggle Piggle hops and squeaks around the forest. He seems to have some kind of involvement with the female lead - Uppsy Daisy. He has a cock-eyed smirk and bright red hair.

Makka Pakka

Makka Pakka lives in a cave under a bridge. Like most people that live in caves, he clearly has some serious issues. He pushes around a tricycle that he can't even ride due to being morbidly obese. He carries 2 items around on his tricycle - a plastic trumpet and a sponge that he uses to clean any rocks he comes across. I think you're getting the picture.

Makka Pakka's Bike!

Here's the aforementioned tricycle. You can see the single-note playing trumpet hanging from the handlebars, and the rock-cleaning sponge in his hand. Read what you will into his wide eyed stare.

The Ninky Nonk

The Ninky Nonk is a driverless train that honks and whistles around the forest. Each character has his/her own carriage. There is no clear ticketing system.

The Tombliboos

Presumably related, these three are the Tombliboos. They enjoy brushing their teeth and pulling up their trousers. Don't ask.

Uppsy Daisy

Uppsy Daisy - She's so vain, she probably thinks this show is about her. The only words to come out her mouth are her own name. She likes to dance, and has a string coming out the side of her dress that deflate it.

There's more to In The Night Garden but I think that's enough for now. If you have any other places you like to look for colour inspiration, please leave a comment! Do you think these colour schemes are usable? Would you use any of them?

Yeah, those schemes are cool. When you break it down, aside from the crazy story lines, the producers may be on to something

I'll have to do one for Thomas the Tank Engine I reckon. Good post.

@Plinky yeah, the colour schemes do come out nice! I'm hoping to sneak these into a corporate design further down the line. Will be interesting to let them know where the colours came from after the project is finished!
@Dan Not if I beat you to it! The colours in Thomas are really nice... Royal blue, racing green etc... That's on my list. I'll let you know if I get it up! Cheers for comments.

Brilliant idea for a post with potential for a great series. Makes me look at the 2 year old's current fav Toy Story in a whole new way. These colour schemes are certainly usable as kids TV tends to need to appeal to the parent's too as we'll be the ones buying all the merchandise ;)
